Moving Files from your Mac to OneDrive
IMPORTANT: A TIMEMACHINE BACKUP WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE RESTORED ONTO YOUR NEW MAC COMPUTER
Another Important Note: The backup process will need time to finish uploading files to OneDrive after copying them over. Please leave your computer on and connected to the internet until the synchronization is complete (indicated by a blue OneDrive icon in the dock with no spinning wheel overlayed).
Step 1:
Open the “Finder” application on your computer (a shortcut is hitting the Command + N Key)
Step 2:
Navigate to “Applications” and launch OneDrive
If you do not see OneDrive listed here, install OneDrive from the macOS app store. Note that you do not need administrative privileges to complete the installation.
Step 3:
Click the grayed-out OneDrive Cloud icon in the menu bar near the current date and time to sign in. If you are already signed in and see recent files, advance to the next step
If you have not already signed in with OneDrive on your device, it will prompt you to sign in with your Office 365 account (FUS Email and password).
Step 4:
Once step 3 is complete, you should see OneDrive listed as an option on the left navigation pane in Finder.
You will want to copy files from each location on your machine (Desktop, Downloads, Documents, Pictures, Etc.) as well as any special locations on your macOS Drive.
Step 5:
Copying files – Best practices: The below is an example on how to copy files from each location to OneDrive.
- Create a folder in OneDrive named “Computer Backup”
- In that OneDrive folder, create folders for “Desktop”, “Documents”, etc.
- Navigate to each location on your computer (i.e. Desktop) and highlight all of the items in that area (Command + A). Right click one of the items and select “Copy”
- In the OneDrive folder your created, go to the appropriate section (i.e. Desktop) by double clicking it, right click in the blank space, and select “Paste”
- Repeat the above steps for all other folders you would like to backup
Step 6:
Keep your computer powered on and connected to the internet until the OneDrive cloud icon in the top menu bar is finished synchronizing.
